School Cafeterias Changes

School year 2020-2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has completely altered school cafeterias’ traditional way of operating. Instead of students eating in their cafeterias, students can instead look forward to breakfast and lunch in their classrooms when attending school and take-home meals for days when they are learning from home.

School breakfast and lunch meals will continue to meet the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrition standards and reflect the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Both meals aim to provide students a healthful balance of foods.

Breakfast will be offered every day to all students at no cost. School cafeterias will make grab and go breakfast meals available at building entrances as students enter the building. Students will simply pick up their breakfast bags and take them to their classrooms to eat. The convenience of this grab and go breakfast meal will provide an opportunity for all students to start their day nourished and ready to learn.

Lunch will be offered every day to all students at no cost. Depending on the school your child attends, lunch meals either be delivered to the classroom, or picked up from the traditional cafeteria line and carried back to the classroom to eat. No matter what food service method will be used, students will still find their same favorite foods being offered with no changes to meal quality or quantity. Choices may be limited this year in order to keep lines moving swiftly and to simplify the distribution of meals.

School cafeterias will be providing take-home breakfast and lunch meals for students (at no cost) on the “hybrid” plan (at school learning combined with online learning from home). On days that students attend school, they will be sent home with pre-packaged meals to cover the days they are learning from home. Students on-site on Mondays/Thursdays will receive take-home meals to cover the days they will be learning from home and students on-site on Tuesdays/Fridays will receive take-home meals to cover the days they will be learning from home.

Under the division’s hybrid re-opening plan, students who opt for 100% remote learning will have an online ordering system where they can sign-up to pick up meals for their children at their school.
